Alex Dowsett: Two-time Giro d’Italia stage winner retires from professional road racing with immediate effect
Alex Dowsett has announced he has retired from professional cycling on the road in pursuit of other challenges in the sport. Dowsett, who has rode for Trek-Livestrong, Team Sky, Movistar, Katusha-Alpecin and Israel Start-Up Nation, originally wanted to race on for another two seasons but has changed his mind. Veteran Swiss rider Nino Schurter made his experience count in Les Gets, winning the men's cross-country title at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships thanks to a well-judged move on the final descent. The 36-year-old fended off the advances of Spain's David Valero Serrano for most of the final lap, before attacking in the last 500 metres and crossing the line with room to spare. A hard-fought race from Italy's Luca Braidot brought him home 29 seconds behind Schurter, delivering him a well-earned bronze medal.

Pauline Ferrand Prevot (France) won her second mountain bike title of World Championship weekend with a dominant performance in the women's cross-country race. In the end her margin of victory was more than a minute over Olympic champion Jolanda Neff (Switzerland), with Haley Batten (United States) rounding out the podium. Ferrand Prevot started 20th on the grid, reflecting her world rankings, and surged straight to the front.

Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes continued her stunning 2022 by winning the women’s road race at the European Championships in a photo finish. Wiebes edged out Elisa Balsamo to win the event on a tight street-circuit in Munich, ahead of bronze medallist Rachele Barbieri and Lisa Brennauer, who finished her final-ever cycling race in fourth, just outside of the medals.

Britain’s Dan Bigham smashed the Hour record after he completed a distance of 55.548km around the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen, Switzerland. Bigham, who is an aerodynamics specialist and race engineer for the British cycling team Ineos Grenadiers, beat the previous record of 55.089km, meaning he was almost half a kilometre faster than when the record was set by Belgium's Victor Campenaerts back in 2019. Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) will miss La Vuelta in an attempt to clear his name after breaching an in-competition ban on painkiller tramadol. Quintana was wiped from the 2022 Tour de France results on Wednesday, although the UCI said it was not a breach of anti-doping rules and he was free to continue competing.
