Josh Tarling made it two golds for Britain in the junior time trials at the Road World Championships as he grabbed the rainbow jersey with a consummate performance. Australia's Hamish McKenzie had set the early pace and managed to cling on to the lead for the best part of three hours as he took silver ahead of Emil Herzog (Germany). But Tarling paced his race superbly to win by 19 seconds.
Britain’s Zoe Backstedt lived up to her billing as favourite in the women’s junior time trial, grabbing gold in a stacked field by an incredibly sizeable margin from Justyna Czapla (Germany) and Febe Jooris (Belgium). “This was one of my biggest goals of the season and I’m so happy – I did so much work for this, I’m just so happy it paid off,” she said after a brilliant performance.
Tobias Foss (Norway) stunned the field – and himself – to win the Road World Championships men’s time trial. The 25-year-old had never won a race outside his own national championships, but his mark of 40:02 ensured the Norwegian the rainbow jersey. Ellen van Dijk (Netherlands) has defended her time trial jersey in style, beating home favourite Grace Brown (Australia) in a thrilling opening to the world championships in Australia. The Dutchwoman was the final rider on the time trial course, powering home to win by just over 12 seconds from the Commonwealth Games champion Brown, with Marlen Reusser (Switzerland) taking third.
USA rider Lawson Craddock has revealed that he won't compete at the UCI World Championships this year because his Australian visa arrived 20 minutes too late. Craddock was due to represent his country in the individual time trial, road race and mixed team relay, but couldn’t travel to Wollongong due to bureaucratic issues.
