Thomas and Geoghegan Hart starred in a lively finish to Stage 8 on Saturday, following a strong attack from Roglic on the final climb, as Evenepoel wilted behind. Denmark’s Oliver Solvhoj produced a superb performance to pip Dario Lillo of Switzerland to the line in a thrilling two-man battle for U23 men’s glory at the UCI cross-country Olympic World Cup, part of the UCI Mountain Bike World Series. Solvhoj finished the opening lap of the seven in first place and remained part of the leading group throughout, his rivals dropping off one by one to create a climactic two-horse race with Lillo.
The UCI has condemned teams who used helicopters to airlift their riders off the mountain after Stage 7’s summit finish at the Giro d’Italia on Friday, saying it «goes against the principles of fair play». With the bus convoy parked 26km down the snowy Gran Sasso, some teams flew their riders direct from the mountaintop to their hotels to cut transfer time ahead of a bumper weekend.
