Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon has become the eighth man to take 500 Test wickets after reaching the major milestone against Pakistan.
Australia's veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon was still in a state of disbelief after completing 500 Test wickets during their thumping 360-run victory over Pakistan on Sunday in the first Test of the three-match series. The 35-year-old walked into his first Test for Australia after picking up an injury during the Ashes earlier this year. He entered the Optus Stadium just four wickets shy of the 500-wicket landmark. In the first session, he scalped three, needing just one wicket in the second session to reach the remarkable feat. With Australia pacers removing Pakistan batters at a brisk pace, it seemed as if Lyon would have to wait for another Test to pick his 500th Test wicket.
India wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan will miss the Test series against South Africa due to personal reasons. The BCCI didn't mention the exact reason for Ishan's release. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named KS Bharat as his replacement. Ishan hasn't featured for the Indian team since the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023, where India were beaten by Australia in the final.
India moved up to the top spot of the World Test Championship (WTC) points table after Pakistan slumped to a 360-run loss against Australia in the first Test match in Perth on Sunday. Following the result, India and Pakistan are joint top of the table with a similar PCT (percentage of points) of 66.67 per cent. Pakistan went into the game with a perfect 100 per cent PCT but the loss meant that although they have 24 points, they share the top spot in the table with India who have 16 points after 2 matches. Pakistan have won two and lost one game in the World Test Championship till now while India have won one and drawn one Test match.
Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon bagged the 500th Test wicket of his career on Sunday as he dismissed Pakistan's Faheem Ashraf in the first Test at Perth to join a 'legendary club' of just seven others to achieve the feat. The 36-year-old veteran, whose longevity is partly due to having not played international white-ball cricket since 2019, reached the milestone in his 123rd match. Among Australia, Lyon is only the third cricketer to reach the milestone, with the icons like Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563) being the others.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels that Glenn Maxwell does not deserve a return to Test cricket, saying that the dashing all-rounder must prove himself first in First Class matches. Maxwell, currently Australia's star player in limited-over cricket after his stellar show in the recent ODI World Cup, is bidding to return to the longest format. The 35-year-old has played only seven Tests to date after making his debut in 2013. He was not considered for the ongoing three-match Test series against Pakistan at home. Ponting feels that one should not be promoted to the red-ball squad unless the player has enough First-Class runs under his belt. “No one deserves a chance unless you've got a truckload of first-class runs behind you," Ponting was quoted as saying by 'Channel 7'.
India star Virat Kohli has left for South Africa for the upcoming two-match Test series set to be played in the rainbow nation, starting December 26. The first game will take place at SuperSport Park, Centurion. Meanwhile, the second Test will kick off on January 3 at Newlands, Cape Town. It is worth noting that Kohli was not named in the white-ball series against the Proteas but he is a part of the squad for the two Test matches. This will be Kohli's first international assignment post India's loss to Australia in the Cricket World Cup 2023 final.
