England recall Stuart Broad and James Anderson for Test series against New Zealand

James Anderson and Stuart Broad returned to the England Test squad on Wednesday for the first two Tests against New Zealand next month. The three-match home series will mark the beginning of Ben Stokes' tenure as England's Test captain and will be the first assignment of their newly-appointed red-ball coach and former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum. Anderson and Broad, first and second on England's all-time list of Test wicket takers with 1,177 between them, were omitted from the three-match series in West Indies where the team lost 1-0 and eventually led to Joe Root's resignation as the captain. Anderson said the snub prompted him to consider retirement. "This is the start of a new era for our Test team under the stewardship of Ben and Brendon," managing director Rob Key said in a statement issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board. "With a blend of youth and experience, we have selected an exciting squad that can compete with New Zealand in next month's Test series."

James Anderson, Stuart Broad Return As England Name Test Squad To Face New Zealand

Veteran seamers James Anderson and Stuart Broad are back in England's Test side as the England and Wales Cricket Board on Wednesday named a 13-strong squad to face New Zealand in a two-match series at home. Anderson and Broad were left out of England's squad for the tour of West Indies, which they lost 0-1. The series against New Zealand will also be England's first under new Test skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum. 1st Test: New Zealand excited to face off against old skipper Brendon McCullum as England coach

Brendon McCullum will be a "massive asset" in the English dressing room and the coach's aggressive mindset should fit hand-in-glove with captain Ben Stokes, New Zealand batsman Henry Nicholls said. Named England head coach last week, former New Zealand captain McCullum will plot the downfall of his old team in the three-Test series starting at Lord's on June 2. England have won only one of their last 17 Tests, but Nicholls described McCullum as a man who could put the swagger back into English cricket.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka: Mushfiqur Rahim becomes first Bangladesh batter to pass 5,000 Test runs

Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das continued to dominate Sri Lanka in the first Test on Wednesday, batting unscathed through to lunch as Bangladesh edged towards a lead on the fourth day in Chittagong. The pair took their unbroken fourth-wicket stand to 165 with Mushfiqur on 85 and Liton 88 as Bangladesh reached 385-3 at the interval, trailing Sri Lanka's first innings 397 runs by just 12 runs. Mushfiqur became the first Bangladesh batter to pass 5,000 Test runs during the session. He needed 15 runs to reach the milestone when starting the day's play on 53, but was frustrated for half an hour as play was delayed by a wet outfield before Bangladesh resumed on 318-3. Mushfiqur reached the mark when he nudged Asitha Fernando towards fine-leg for two runs, to cheers from a sparse crowd at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
