Team India are currently on top in the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham and it is mainly due to the spirited fightback led by Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja on Day 1 of the match. India were 98/5 and it was then that Jadeja and Pant forged a 222-run stand for the sixth wicket with Pant eventually scoring 146 while Jadeja played a knock of 104. Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers on Monday praised the duo for their performance.
“Play without fear” might just be the easiest cliche to throw around in sport at the elite level.
India currently hold the advantage in the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Jonny Bairstow, though, had threatened to take the game away from India during the England first innings. The England batter, however, was struggling initially having scored 13 from 61 deliveries and survived a few close calls. But it all changed when Virat Kohli decided to launch a few verbal volleys at Bairstow. The two bickered for a while on the field and Bairstow then proceeded to smash 93 off his next 79 balls. The video of Kohli and Bairstow going at it went viral on social media and now the Englishman has spoken about what transpired in the middle.
Jonny Bairstow has been England’s most in-form batter this year. In fact, he is the leading run-getter in 2022 in Test cricket. Yet, the man who terrorised New Zealand, with two brutal hundreds, could hardly lay bat on ball as Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah put him through a trial by fire late on day two as he went back unbeaten on 12 off 47 balls to fight another day. He would have hoped that a brighter forecast with the sun out on day three at Edgbaston on Sunday, would have made life a lot easier. But he didn’t find any favours from both Bumrah and Shami. Shami was relentless with his line and cut Bairstow into half at least a dozen times. He also used the away-going delivery smartly to induce the false shot. He remained scoreless for 20 deliveries as all the talk of 'Bazball' went out of the window.
England, who had started proceedings at 84 for five, were bowled out for 284, giving India a sizeable lead of 132, despite a counter-attacking hundred for the ages by England’s man in form, Jonny Bairstow (106, 140 balls, 14x4, 2x6). Advantage India, many felt. But under skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, this England team knows how to fight. They prized out the scalps of Shubman Gill and Hanuma Vihari and more importantly Virat Kohli, caught off a rebound in the slips by Joe Root off a beauty from Stokes that bounced and seamed off a length. It was the second change of ball out of three that did the trick for Stokes and England as Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara were looking totally untroubled and Kohli, with a couple of gorgeous cover drives, looked in the mood. The ball change seemed to help the bowlers get more bounce and movement that triggered Kohli’s fall.
The Washington Nationals say slugger Juan Soto left Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins with a left calf injury.
Maro Itoje has warned his England team-mates they must crank up the intensity for their second Test against Australia if they are to rescue the series.
