KL Rahul's prolonged run of failures remains a worry but India will still start as overwhelming favourites for another three-day finish when they take on Australia in the second Test in New Delhi from Friday. The match will be one of Indian cricket's understated warrior Cheteshwar Pujara's 100th Test, a feat achieved after 13 years of sweat and toil. While Pujara would like to savour the momentous personal milestone with a 20th Test ton, one can't but paper over the concerns around India's top-order.
New Zealand vs England 1st Test Day 1 LIVE:Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope provided England as solid start on Day 1 of the first Test against New Zealand as Ben Stokes' men kicked-off the tour Down Under on Thursday. Tim Southee has been New Zealand's most dangerous bowler, picking 2 wickets so far. The visitors, however, will still hope to put over 300 runs on the board. (LIVE Scorecard)
Shreyas Iyer would "walk back" into India playing eleven if he can take the load of a five-day Test as he deserves a spot in the side after playing some under-pressure knocks recently, head coach Rahul Dravid said on Wednesday. Iyer had sustained a lower back injury during the white-ball series against Sri Lanka last month and had to undergo a one-month rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy. Iyer also missed the first Test against Australia where Suryakumar Yadav made his debut. Dravid kept his cards close to his chest on whether Iyer is ready to take the rigours of the longest format, but he made an important point about team management's philosophy where any performing player if he comes back after injury would automatically get his place back.
The Indian cricket team on Wednesday afternoon rose to the No. 1 spot in ICC rankings after the official website of the governing body of the sport showed that the Rohit Sharma-led side had surpassed Australia in the latest team rankings. In fact, India held the no. 1 position in the ODI and T20I formats as well. The news was widely covered by Indian media. However, at around 7 pm IST, the ICC website showed that Australia are the No. 1 Test side while India are No. 2. India continue to hold the No. 1 slot in T20Is and ODIs.
In the afternoon on Wednesday, the official website of ICC showed India on top of the Test rankings with 115 rating points and Australia as second with 111 points. But later in the evening at around 7 pm IST, cricket's global governing body put Australia back on top with 126 rating points and India as second with 115 points. India had recently beaten Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test in Nagpur.
Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has no second thoughts about Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in the playing XI of the second Australia Test but only if he can take the load of a five-day match.Iyer, who had sustained a lower back injury during the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, has been drafted into the squad for the second Test against Australia starting Friday, after getting clearance by the BCCI medical team.
An optimistic Mitchell Starc on Wednesday said he was hopeful of returning to the Australian playing XI for the second Test against India, starting in New Dehi on Friday. The pace ace missed the series opener, which Australia lost by an innings an 132 runs inside three days, due to a tendon damage to his left middle finger. He arrived in India on Saturday. "There's a few boxes to tick but it's on track ... I'd like to be a little further down the road (in the recovery)," Starc told reporters.
