Premier India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lost six rating points but still remained joint number one Test bowler with England quick James Anderson in the ICC rankings released on Wednesday. Ashwin, who surged to No. 1 in Test bowling rankings last week, took just four wickets in the two innings in the third Test against Australia in Indore. Australia won the match by nine wickets to secure their first victory on Indian soil since 2017. It meant it's now a tie at the top with both Ashwin and Anderson occupying the pole position with 859 points each.
After facing a big defeat in the third Test, Team India is all set to face Australia in the fourth and final Test of the four-match series in Ahmedabad, starting from Thursday. The equation remains simple for the hosts, win the series 3-1 and don't depend on the result of Sri Lanka's away rubber in New Zealand for a ticket to summit WTC clash in June. Team India went ahead with KS Bharat as their wicketkeeper in the first three matches and benched Ishan Kishan. However, Bharat failed to leave a mark with the bat. Speculations are rife that Ishan might make his Test debut by replacing Bharat.
Australia's stand-in captain Steve Smith on Wednesday said that the pitch for the fourth and last Test match against India in Ahmedabad would be slightly different to the first three pitches and added they might receive opportunities for bigger totals on this wicket. The fourth Test between India and Australia will begin on Thursday in Ahmedabad with hosts aiming to book their place in the ICC World Test Championship final with a win.
India will eye a World Test Championship final berth when they face Australia in the fourth and final Test of the series, starting March 9 in Ahmedabad. While the guests have already confirmed themselves a spot in the WTC final with the win in Indore, the hosts would be needing a win in the final game to avoid any dependency. In the first two games, India dominated, but Australia made a good comeback in the third Test to trail the series 1-2. The Rohit Sharma-led side won the first game by an innings and 132 runs and the second game by 6 wickets. On the other hand, Australia bagged the third game by 9 wickets.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he and Prime Minister Modi will be at the toss for the fourth and final Test for the ongoing series between India and Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, at Ahmedabad on Thursday. PM Modi and his Australian counterpart will be in attendance on the opening day of the fourth Test on Thursday. In a radio interview with NOVA 93.7 Perth ahead of his ongoing visit to India, Albanese confirmed to the hosts, Nat Locke and Shaun Mcmanus, that he and PM Modi will be at the toss for the Ahmedabad Test.
The debate over the Indore pitch for the the third Test between India and Australia, does not seem to end anytime soon. The pitch at the Holkar Stadium in Indore offered a lot of turn, which came as a blessing for the spinners but as a nightmare for the batters as a total of 31 wickets fell in three days of play. The match finally ended on Day 3 with the visitors bagging a nine-wicket victory and securing their place in the World Test Championship final. As the fourth Test is just around the corner, skipper Rohit Sharma had hinted that Team India might go for a green top pitch, in order to prepare for the WTC finals, which will be played at the Oval in London. However, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting dismissed all the claims and stated that the hosts would be opting for a rank turner instead of a green pitch as they need to win the fourth Test in order to enter the WTC final.
