Reigning champion Iga Swiatek maintained her bid to become the first woman to successfully defend the French Open title in 16 years by cruising into the third round on Thursday. The world number one crushed American Claire Liu 6-4, 6-0 on Court Philippe Chatrier. Swiatek, who turned 22 on Wednesday, will face China's Wang Xinyu on Saturday for a place in the second week.
It was a match to remember, and it was certainly an emotional ovation to remember as a tearful Daniel Altmaier basked in his win over Jannik Sinner at the 2023 French Open on Thursday. The match itself could hardly have been more epic, taking five hours and 26 minutes to complete on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. Eventually, after several failed attempts to close it out, Altmaier secured a five-set, 6-7(0) 7-6(7) 1-6 7-6(4) 7-5, victory to progress through to the third round.
