Defending champion Elena Rybakina is into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after her opponent Beatriz Haddad Maia retired injured just five games into their encounter on Centre Court. The Brazilian had come into the encounter with hopes of causing an upset, but at 2-1 down — on the verge of being broken — she appeared to suffer an issue with her back mid-rally, and was subsequently barely able to move. Ad Despite some treatment and carrying on until Rybakina had moved 4-1 up, Haddad Maia tearfully decided she could no longer continue.
World number three Daniil Medvedev reached his first Wimbledon quarter-final on Monday when Czech opponent Jiri Lehecka retired with an injury. Medvedev was 6-4, 6-2 ahead when his 37th-ranked opponent, who had needed a medical timeout for a right foot injury, retired from their Court One clash. Former US Open winner Medvedev will face either Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Greek world number five, or unseeded Christopher Eubanks of the United States for a place in the semi-finals. "I saw that his movement was restricted but I didn't see that it was causing any real trouble," said Medvedev.
Teenager Mirra Andreeva was given a point penalty for throwing her racket and refused to shake the umpire's hand in a fourth-round loss to Madison Keys at Wimbledon.
The Wimbledon Round of 16 clash between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz was an intense affair with both players getting pushed to their limits. However, there was one moment in the match which left both the players and fans in splits. During the second set of the match, Djokovic chased a drop shot from Hurkacz which bounced inside his side but the spin took it towards Hurkacz's end. The top seed stretched out to get a decisive touch on the ball but ended up getting tripped by the net and completely lost his control. Djokovic did not sustain any injuries due to the incident but it left everyone in splits as Hurkacz enquired about his well-being and they even had a small chat.

Belarus' Victoria Azarenka did «nothing wrong» by not shaking hands with her Ukrainian opponent Elina Svitolina after their fourth-round match at Wimbledon, says Laura Robson. Azarenka was booed off Court 1 by those who attended the thriller, which Svitolina won 2-6 6-4 7-6(9), after she waved towards Svitolina near the net rather than offer a handshake. Ad Svitolina has previously publicly stated that she will not shake hands with a Russian or Belarusian player because of the war in Ukraine which began in February 2022.
