Coming off a pair of first-round exits at the past two Grand Slam tournaments, Maria Sakkari was not necessarily anticipating a terrific showing at the DC Open. So how does a victory over the event's No. 1 seed and a run to her first final of the season sound?
Austria's Dominic Thiem, playing his first final in nearly three years, was swept aside 6-3, 6-1 by Sebastian Baez in Kitzbuehel on Saturday with the Argentine champion apologising for winning.
Taylor Fritz on Friday extended his winning streak to six matches on the American hard courts by securing his passage in the semi-finals of the Washington Open. The American battled past three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-4 then returned to breeze past Jordan Thompson. Fritz was not the only player to feature in two matches on Friday at the combined ATP and WTA hardcourt, after rain brought play to a premature end on Thursday. His match against Murray, however, was interrupted due to "Climate Disaster & "End Fossil Fuels" protest.
Andy Murray held firm in a 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 victory over Brandon Nakashima in the ATP hardcourt tournament in Washington on Wednesday, the British great's first match since an epic second-round exit at Wimbledon. The 36-year-old Scot, ranked 44th in the world, saved all six break points he faced against the 70th-ranked American to reach the third round. That included one in the final game, when a double fault left Murray down 30-40.
Canadians Leylah Fernandez and Gabriela Dabrowski have both been eliminated from the Citi Open.
World number nine Taylor Fritz said climate activists need to find a better way of protesting instead of "annoying" sports fans by interrupting events, after his Washington Open match against Andy Murray was briefly halted on Friday.
