German tennis star Alexander Zverev was handed a 450,000 euro fine ($475,300) by a Berlin court for allegedly assaulting a woman in May 2020, a judicial spokeswoman said Tuesday. The former world number two is contesting the fine, which was issued on October 2, and has "lodged an objection", a spokeswoman for the Berlin courts said in a statement. Zverev has been "accused of physically abusing a woman and damaging her health during an argument" in the German capital over three years ago, the spokeswoman said, adding that until a final ruling is made, Zverev is considered to be innocent.

Spanish world number two Alcaraz, who was making his return to the court following injuries to his lower back and left foot, had been given a bye in the first round but had no answer to Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin who eased through 6-3, 6-4. "He didn't surprise me at all because I knew that he has been playing a great level these last few months, beating big guys, reaching finals," said a disconsolate Alcarez.

However that goal looked unlikely during a nervy opening from Swiatek, who was broken in her first service game before seventh seed Vondrousova held for a 2-0 lead.
Dominic Thiem scripted a fine comeback performance to defeat former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka for a place in the second round of Paris Masters. Thiem saved a match point in the third set at 3-5 before rallying past Wawrinka 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round. The thrilling match between two of the best one-handed backhands in recent memory ended after two hours and 31 minutes of thrilling play. "It's very nice to share a great and close match like that with Stan because we have a history together of many great matches. Obviously, he's one of my big idols backhand wise," Thiem was quoted as saying by ATP. While Thiem hit highlight-reel strokes throughout the match, particularly with jaw-dropping passing shots, Wawrinka was the first to come close to winning.
