An Australian TV presenter has publicly apologised to Novak Djokovic and Serbian tennis fans after the 10-time Australian Open champion boycotted his post-match interview on Sunday.

The 10-time champion has launched a boycott of on-court interviews at the Australian Open until he receives an apology from host broadcaster Channel 9 over a segment which he says: “Made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments towards me.” On Friday, Channel 9 host Tony Jones was broadcasting in front of a group of Novak Djokovic supporters at Melbourne Park. “Welcome back to Melbourne Park, where you can see the Novak Djokovic fans, they’re in full voice,” Jones said. “The chants are quite extraordinary.” He then turned round to face them and pantomimed some sledging chants of his own: “Novak, he’s overrated,” Jones sang. “Novak’s a has-been. Elina Svitolina delivered a stunning first-set comeback before overwhelming Veronika Kudermetova Monday to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals, but the Ukrainian did not shake hands with her Russian opponent. Svitolina, the 28th seed, followed up her shock win over world number four Jasmine Paolini in the third round with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over the world number 75 on Rod Laver Arena. It put her into the last eight at Melbourne Park for a third time, but her first since 2019. "That was a lifetime ago," said Svitolina after wrapping up the match in 1hr 23min. A leading TV presenter apologised on-air Monday to Novak Djokovic after mocking the 24-time Grand Slam winner and his Serbian fans at the Australian Open, saying it was meant to be banter. The 37-year-old tennis great refused to do a routine on-court interview after beating Jiri Lehecka in three sets on Rod Laver Arena to make the quarter-finals on Sunday evening. Afterwards he said it was in protest at Tony Jones, a top sports presenter with host broadcaster Channel Nine, who he accused of "insulting and offensive comments" towards him and Serbian fans. Djokovic said he would boycott interviews with the TV station until he got an apology. "The comments were made on the news on the Friday night, which I considered to be banter. I considered it to be humour, which is consistent with most things I do," Jones said on Monday.
Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic sent his support to the thousands of people protesting against the government in Serbia on Sunday and condemned "violence" against his compatriots. Djokovic, speaking at a news conference in Melbourne where he is taking part in the Australian Open, said that he cannot "pretend that nothing is happening". "My support goes to the young people, students and all those who own the future of our country," Djokovic said after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the tournament. Serbia has been rocked by a wave of student-led protests following a roof collapse at a train station in the northern city of Novi Sad on November 1 which killed 15 people.
