Eurosport expert Mischa Zverev has given his views on Roger Federer potentially returning to the tennis tour and shared an insight from a conversation with his coach, Ivan Ljubicic. Federer, who has won eight of his 20 Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon, is set to drop off the rankings this summer as he has been inactive for a year.
Eurosport expert Tim Henman has given his reaction to Stanislas Wawrinka's furious rant about the temperature of the water at the French Open during his first-round match against Corentin Moutet. The Swiss star, who has had his career in recent years blighted by a series of injuries, was taking on Frenchman Moutet out on Court Suzanne-Lenglen when he burst into a row with the official. Ad/> The 37-year-old let his frustrations get the better of him over, of all things, the condition of the water at Roland-Garros.
Tim Henman has warned players they have to control their temper, after Andrey Rublev hit a ball in anger at the French Open which was described as “not a good look for the sport”. The Russian smashed a ball into his bench next to the umpire’s chair during his first round win over Kwon Soon-woo and was fortunate it did not fly up to hit a ball kid or an official. Ad/> “You don’t want to be hitting balls in anger and hitting ball kids, that can be an expensive mistake, as I found out in 1995…”, Henman told Eurosport, referring to his unfortunate disqualification at Wimbledon 27 years ago.
Reigning champion Novak Djokovic will come up against his long-time former coach when he plays Slovakia's Alex Molcan in the second round Wednesday at Roland Garros, while Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz look to keep their French Open title ambitions on course. World number one Djokovic split from Marian Vajda after last year's ATP Finals having worked with the Slovakian coach since he was a teenager in 2006. They took a break from each in other in 2017 but reunited the next year.
Mats Wilander believes Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic “would not be at this level” without Roger Federer, and hopes the Swiss gets the farewell he deserves when he retires. Nadal and Djokovic started their careers later but have joined Federer in dominating tennis over the last 20 years, winning 61 Grand Slam titles between them.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a former Australian Open runner-up and world number five, said he "couldn't have asked for a better script" as he bid an emotional goodbye to tennis at Roland Garros on Tuesday. The 37-year-old Tsonga, who announced last month he would retire following the French Open, lost 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 7-6 (7/0) in the first round to Casper Ruud. "It was pure madness today. One of the best atmospheres I have seen in my career, and it's my last match," said Tsonga. "I couldn't have asked for something better. I couldn't have asked for a better script, apart from the fact that I could have won."
