The first week of the French Open is all wrapped up and the start of the second has already started, with all of the round-of-16 matches played and the quarter-finals decided. Rohan Bopanna reached his first Grand Slam semifinal in seven years after he and his Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop rallied to beat Lloyd Glasspool and Henri Heliovaara in the men's doubles quarterfinals of the French Open, here. The Indo-Dutch pair eked out a 4-6 6-4 7-6 (3) win over the British-Finnish combination in a hard-fought contest on Monday night. Bopanna last reached the semifinals of a tennis Major at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships when he had teamed up with Romania's Florin Mergea and lost in a gruelling five-setter to Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau. Bopanna, 42, and Middelkoop, 38, will face 12th seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Roger on Thursday in the last four.
Zheng Qinwen said severe stomach cramps ruined her hopes of completing a shock French Open win against world number one Iga Swiatek on Monday and left her "wishing I was a man". Zheng, just 19 and playing in her first Roland Garros, took the first set off the top seed before slipping to a 6-7 (5/7), 6-0, 6-2 defeat in their last-16 tie. The world number 74 had needed a medical timeout to strap her injured right leg early in the second set but she revealed that was the least of her concerns.
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal prepare to meet for the 59th time in their storied history at the French Open. But could this be their final clash at Roland Garros?
India's Rohan Bopanna, 42, and Netherlands' Matwe Middelkoop progressed to the semi-finals of the ongoing French Open 2022 after defeating the duo of Briton Llyod Glasspool and Finland's Harri Heliovaara in the quarter-finals of the men's doubles event. Reeling at 0-3 in the final set tie-break, Bopanna and Middelkoop held their nerves and captured 10 consecutive points, winning the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-3) on Monday.
Wimbledon champion Andy Murray said on Monday the decision to strip the Grand Slam of its ranking points was not a "great move" by the ATP and WTA Tours. Wimbledon had its ranking points taken away by the men's ATP and women's WTA after the grasscourt major opted to exclude players from Russia and Belarus because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a 'special operation'. "Removing the points, if it doesn't stop players from playing then I don't think it's a great move from the ATP," Murray told reporters after moving into the second round of the Surbiton Trophy grasscourt event.
