PARIS (AP) — Iga Swiatek benefited from the chair umpire's no-call on a double bounce that gave her a key first-set service break during a match-altering five-game run and the French Open's No. 1 seed moved into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jessica Pegula on Wednesday.
Iga Swiatek made it 33 wins and counting as she eased into the semi-finals of the French Open.
Iga Swiatek powered into the French Open semi-finals on Wednesday as a comfortable victory over American Jessica Pegula extended the world number one's winning streak to 33 matches. The Polish star cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win on Court Philippe Chatrier to set up a last-four meeting with Daria Kasatkina on Thursday. Swiatek will equal Venus Williams' record for the longest unbeaten run for a women's player in the 21st century if she wins a second Roland Garros title this week. But she said she still feels nervous before big matches despite appearing in almost unbeatable form.
Coco Gauff reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at the French Open on Tuesday when she defeated fellow American Sloane Stephens but insisted graduating high school while simultaneously playing professional tennis was a tougher assignment. Gauff, 18 years old and ranked 23 in the world, triumphed 7-5, 6-2 over her compatriot and will face Italy's 59th-ranked Martina Trevisan for a place in Saturday's championship match. Gauff was junior champion at Roland Garros in 2018 and then burst into the public consciousness when just 15, she became the youngest woman to qualify for Wimbledon.
Amelie Mauresmo, a former No. 1 player who is in her first year as the French Open's first female tournament director, said Wednesday that nine of the 10 night sessions at Roland Garros involved men's matches because women's tennis currently has less "appeal."
PARIS: Women's tennis is not as appealing as men's tennis at the moment, French Open tournament director Amelie Mauresmo said after questions were raised about the scheduling of the claycourt Grand Slam on Wednesday (Jun 1).
