Newly crowned French Open champion Iga Swiatek urged Ukraine to "stay strong" following the invasion by Russia.
Iga Swiatek received an ovation for thanking her family, her team and praising Coco Gauff after winning the 2022 French Open, but the biggest cheer during her victory speech came when she sent a message of support to Ukraine.
Alexander Zverev said on Saturday that he has "several torn lateral ligaments" in his right ankle after suffering the injury during his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal. The German world number three turned his ankle while trailing Nadal 7-6 (10/8), 6-6 on Friday, screaming in pain before retiring from the match minutes later. "Based on the first medical checks, it looks like I have torn several lateral ligaments in my right foot," Zverev wrote in an Instagram post.
Emma Raducanu has been told that Coco Gauff is the "leader" of her generation in women's tennis after the 18-year-old's run to the French Open final. The American lost her maiden Grand Slam final to Iga Swiatek on Saturday but the tennis legend thought Gauff was still ahead of Raducanu despite the Brit winning a Major title at the US Open.
Rafael Nadal will eye his 14th French Open title as he takes on Norwegian eighth seed Casper Ruud in the men's singles final at Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris. Nadal is yet to lose a final while Ruud will be playing his first slam final. Nadal defeated third seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-final after the German had to pull put of their match due to an ankle injury. Ruud, on the other hand, had to come from a set down to beat Croatian Marin Cilic in the other semifinal.
Iga Swiatek cruised past teen star Coco Gauff with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the French Open 2022 women's singles final to claim her second Roland Garros title on Saturday. The Pole now has 35 wins on the trot, matching Venus Williams' record for the longest winning streak by a women's player in the 21st century. Venus Williams won five WTA titles and the Olympic gold medal during her unbeaten run at the start of the century, which no one has improved on since.
PARIS — Iga Swiatek is so efficient, so smooth, with a racket in her hand, seemingly never flustered a bit and, for months now, never beaten.
