LONDON: A tearful Roger Federer ended his historic career with defeat alongside long-time rival Rafael Nadal in a doubles match at the Laver Cup in the early hours of Saturday (Sep 24).
Roger Federer has attained almost saintly status. More than 19 years after winning his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003, which set him on the road to being acclaimed as the greatest player of all time, Federer in the early hours of Saturday bade farewell to tennis.
Roger Federer ended his remarkable career with an agonising doubles defeat alongside a long-time rival, Rafael Nadal, at the Laver Cup in the early hours of Saturday. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, dogged by a knee injury, has not played since the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals and last week announced his retirement at the age of 41. But he rolled back the years in London, scene of many of his most famous triumphs at Wimbledon, to the delight of a feverish, partisan crowd.
Roger Federer was beaten in his final ever tennis match as the Swiss legend and Rafael Nadal lost out to Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe in their doubles rubber at the Laver Cup. During a week which featured plenty of tributes and celebrations for Federer, the team dubbed 'Fedal' were beaten 4-6 7-6(2) 11-9 by the Team World duo in London. Ad Federer and Nadal received an emotional standing ovation as they walked out together in front of a sold out O2 Arena in London.
