The match was declared a 'tie', though the International Cricket Council's playing conditions mandate the usage of a 1-over eliminator to find the winner in case of tied contests in the 50-over format.

As Team India's batting collapsed to 208 all out in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, the side picked up an unwanted accolade. The loss meant that this will be the first time in 27 years that India will not win a bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka, in which at least one match has been completed. India have won 11 consecutive bilateral ODI series since 1997, but that streak will come to an end here, as India can manage a 1-1 series draw at best.

A controversy took place during the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday. On the final ball of the 15th over, an Akila Dananjaya delivery caught Virat Kohli right in front of the stumps and umpire also raised his finger over the LBW appeal made by the Sri Lankan players. Kohli had a chat with non-striker Shubman Gill and then he went upstairs. A review put the third umpire in a big dilemma. This is because the UltraEdge showed a spike when the ball crossed Kohli's bat before hitting his pad, but the visuals showed that there was a good gap between the bat and the ball during that time.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma termed the 32-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the second ODI as hurting, and said there will be discussions about the way batters played in the middle-overs on Sunday. India were jolted by leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay's six-wicket haul, and were bowled out for 208 while chasing 241, once again exposing their fragility against spin. "When you lose a game, everything hurts. It's not just about those 10 overs (when India lost six wickets for 50 runs). You have to play consistent cricket and we failed to do that. Little disappointed but these things happen," said Rohit in the post-match presentation ceremony. "We weren't good enough. Don't want to look too much into how we played.
