Chess great Magnus Carlsen has urged his game's top sporting body not to readmit Russia and Belarus ahead of a key vote this weekend on whether to restore their membership. Russia and Belarus were booted out of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in 2022 over the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine, effectively banning the two countries from international competitions. Carlsen was speaking at a FIDE gala in Budapest on Thursday evening, in which he paid tribute to Russian grandmaster Garry Kasparov while accepting an award for greatest player of all time.
Paris Olympics Sports Equipment Moves To New Homes
In western Paris, the swimming pool where national hero Leon Marchand won four gold medals at this summer's Olympics in the French capital is being stripped down and prepared for a move. The pool was part of one the many temporary sports facilities used during the Games, built inside the Paris Defense Arena, a stadium to the west of the city which was deafening during each of Marchand's medal-winning exploits. Around 25 kilometres (miles) of scaffolding are being pulled down by the pool, while the 50-metre water basin itself -- made of hundreds of aluminium panels bolted together -- will soon be dismantled and sent by truck to a new home in a northern suburb.
Chess Olympiad Trophy Goes Missing From All India Chess Federation Office
An "embarrassed" All India Chess Federation (AICF) has filed a police complaint after a Chess Olympiad trophy its team won in the last edition of the tournament at home went missing from its office, forcing the sports body to arrange for a replica of the prized possession and tender an apology. It is a rolling trophy, and the incident came at a time when the Indian men's team is closing in on the gold medal in the ongoing 45th edition of the Olympiad at Budapest. AICF sources confirmed that the Gaprindashvili Trophy, given to the team with the best overall performance across open and women's divisions, has gone missing. India was the last holder of the trophy, having won it here in 2022.
