A look at the winners and losers from Sunday’s Cup playoff race at the Charlotte Roval:
The 2023 FIM Speedway Grand Prix line-up has been finalised with 14 of this year’s stars returning and a reserve revolution as substitute stars from seven different nations are nominated. Great Britain’s triple world champion Tai Woffinden and 2017 Speedway GP world champion Jason Doyle return for 2023 after being selected by the SGP Commission.
Leon Madsen is “hopeful” he can make a stronger bid for the Speedway Grand Prix title in 2023 after finishing runner-up to Bartosz Zmarzlik this season. It’s the second time Madsen has finished as the runner-up in the championship and he is yet to become world champion, although he did win the European title this year. Ad He failed to win a Grand Prix this season but has been open about making changes to his bike to make improvements ahead of next year.
Four-time Speedway world champion Greg Hancock believes Bartosz Zmarzlik “will not have it as easy” in 2023 but suggests his rivals will have to find “a different angle” to beat him. Zmarzlik won this year’s championship with a round to spare as his consistency saw him slowly increase his lead over Leon Madsen, with the other top riders soon finding themselves in a battle for third. Ad He joins an illustrious list of names that have won at least three Speedway world titles.
Martin Vaculik won his second Speedway Grand Prix of 2022 with victory at the season-finale in Torun. Vaculik was on top form all night, winning his opening three heats before dominating the final by beating Bartosz Zmarzlik, Maciej Janowski and Leon Madsen. Ad The Slovakian chose Gate 2 for the final and got the perfect start by beating Zmarzlik to Turn 1.
Heat 3 –Woryna, Woffinden, Przedpelski, Zmarzlik Ad There’s a long hold at the start before Bartosz Zmarzlik is sandwiched on the first lap. Tai Woffinden makes a fantastic move around Kacper Woryna on Lap 2, with Zmarazlik diving up the inside to get past his compatriot on the final lap. He nearly overtakes Woffinden too into the final corner.
The final round of the 2022 FIM Speedway Grand Prix takes place in Torun, Poland this weekend with much still at stake for several riders. Although Bartosz Zmarzlik wrapped up the title in the last round in Maililla, the battle for who will join him on the podium, as well as in next season’s championship, remains as heated as ever. Ad Leon Madsen sits in second place 17 clear of third and is guaranteed a medal unless for whatever reason he is unable to compete in the finale.
Jakub Miskowiak won the FIM Speedway Final on Friday night in Torun, Poland. Mateusz Cierniak, Mateusz Swidnicki, Miskowiak and Wiktor Lampart lined up in the final round in Torun, Poland.
