The father of teenage Spain and Barcelona star Lamine Yamal was stabbed and left in a serious but stable condition, Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported late Wednesday. Mounir Nasraoui was stabbed multiple times in a car park in Mataro after an argument with some men while he was walking his dog, who later came back to attack him, said the report, citing "official sources familiar with the incident". The Catalan regional police, in charge of the investigation, did not publicly confirm the incident or respond to AFP requests for information. Newspaper La Vanguardia said some arrests have already been made. The attack took place in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataro, around 30 kilometres north of Barcelona, where Yamal grew up and where his father and grandmother still live.
PARIS : An ecstatic Luis de la Fuente, coach of Spain's senior national team, said his country's football should be more highly valued after the under-23 side's triumph in the final of the Olympic tournament against France on Friday.
Days after Spain triumphed in the Euro 2024 final, the country's football federation (RFEF) suffered a new scandal as its president Pedro Rocha was handed a two-year suspension, according to media reports on Tuesday. Spanish media outlets Onda Cero and Iusport reported Spain's Administrative Tribunal of Sport (TAD) suspended Rocha due to his making of decisions outside of his power, such as his dismissal of the federation's general secretary Andreu Camps. Rocha was appointed RFEF president in April, taking the place of disgraced former chief Luis Rubiales, who was forced to step down in September 2023 after forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso during the medal ceremony after Spain won the Women's World Cup.
Disgraced former Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales will stand trial in February next year for his unsolicited kiss on the lips of Women's World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso, the court overseeing the process said Monday. Rubiales provoked worldwide outrage by kissing Hermoso during the medal ceremony after Spain beat England to win the World Cup in Australia last year. In May, a court had ruled Rubiales should be tried for sexual assault over the kiss, and for the alleged coercion subsequently exerted to make her say that it was consensual, without setting a date. The trial will be held at the Audiencia Nacional, a Madrid court in charge of complex cases, from February 3 to 19, the court said in a statement. Public prosecutors have requested a sentence of two-and-a-half years in prison for Luis Rubiales - one year for sexual assault and 18 months for coercion. The prosecution is also asking for two years' probation once the sentence has been served and for him to pay €50,000 in compensation to the player. Rubiales is also under investigation in a separate alleged corruption case involving his reign at the federation and has denied any wrongdoing.
