Chelsea win 1-0 at Spurs as Joao Pedro ends goal drought

LONDON: Chelsea beat hosts Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday with Brazil striker Joao Pedro scoring the only goal of the game and getting back on the scoresheet for the first time since August. Enzo Maresca’s men, stung by last weekend’s home defeat by Sunderland, took the lead when Moises Caicedo stole the ball from Micky van de Ven and squared for Joao Pedro who made no mistake from eight meters in the 34th minute. Chelsea climbed to fourth place in the table on 17 points after 10 games, one rung below Spurs on goal difference. Spurs have now registered just one win against Chelsea in their last 14 Premier League meetings.

German third-division player subjected to racist abuse at game in Munich

MUNICH: German third-division club 1860 Munich have apologized after one of their fans racially abused Energie Cottbus forward Justin Butler during a league match between the teams on Saturday. “TSV 1860 Munich will strive for a full investigation into this incident and will hold the spectator accountable using all available means,” the club said in a statement. The game was almost called off after Butler was subjected to monkey chants from a person among the 1860 fans. The club said players from both teams, stewards and other fans helped identify the alleged perpetrator, who was handed over to police. The incident was addressed by the stadium announcer and 1860 supporters chanted “Nazis out!” while play was suspended.

Arsenal cruise against Burnley as Forest hold Man Utd

LONDON: Arsenal brushed Burnley aside 2-0 on Saturday to surge seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as struggling Nottingham Forest held in-form Manchester United to a 2-2 draw. Chelsea edged Tottenham 1-0 to climb to fourth in the table while champions Liverpool prepared to host Aston Villa in the late kick-off, desperate to end a four-match losing streak that has derailed their title defense. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have won five league games in a row to position themselves as firm favorites to end their painful two-decade wait to be crowned English champions. Viktor Gyokeres headed the Gunners ahead following a Declan Rice corner in the first half at Turf Moor for his first league goal since mid-September — yet more joy for the set-piece specialists. England midfielder Rice himself headed home to double the visitors’ lead in the 35th minute and put them in total control. “The first half was exceptional — we scored two goals and gave nothing away,” Arteta told the BBC. “That was the platform. We had to make a few changes and didn’t have that much control in the second half. Defending was exceptional again, we didn’t give anything.” Arsenal, who have now won nine games in a row in all competitions, have enviable options in attack but their team is built on a rock-solid defense that has conceded just three league goals in 10 games this season.

Dodgers hold off Blue Jays 3-1 to force World Series game seven

TORONTO: The Los Angeles Dodgers, fueled by a three-run third inning and another dominant pitching performance from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 on Friday to force a decisive World Series game seven. The defending champion Dodgers had to dig deep to thwart the Blue Jays’ ninth-inning rally bid and knot Major League Baseball’s best-of-seven championship series at three games apiece. They kept their bid for the first title repeat in 25 years alive while the Blue Jays will be aiming to claim their first title in 32 years when they host game seven on Saturday. Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow, scheduled to start game seven, stepped in with Blue Jays runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth. He induced a fly out from Ernie Clement before Andres Gimenez hit into a game-ending double play – Dodgers left fielder Enrique Hernandez fielding Gimenez’s line drive and firing the ball to second base, where Miguel Rojas caught Addison Barger for the final out. “That was crazy,” Mookie Betts said of the game-ending double play. “I thought it was a bloop hit and I saw Kike running to catch it and I turned to look and I saw he was halfway.
