CHATEAUROUX, France : Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec of Serbia won the 10 metre air pistol mixed team gold at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.
India achieved another historic first in its Olympic history as Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh helped the nation earn its second medal at the Paris Games. It was the first time that India clinched any medal in a team event at the Olympic Games, with Manu and Sarabjot getting the better of the South Korean pair 16-10. While the entire country has been singing praises for Manu, Sarabjot also proved himself on the grand stage, playing an equally important role in doubling India's tally.
A calm and composed Manu Bhaker scripted history to become the first Indian athlete in post-independence era to win two Olympic medals in a single edition of the Games as she combined with an equally unruffled Sarabjot Singh to clinch the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze on Tuesday. The Indian pair defeated the Korean duo of Lee Wonoho and Oh Yeh Jin 16-10 to earn the country its second medal at Chateauroux's shooting range. The 22-year-old Bhaker had earlier bagged the bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol event at the same venue on Sunday, wiping off the terrible memories of a horrendous Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020.
Olympics 2024 Day 4 Live Updates: Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh are fighting for the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team shooting event against South Korea on Day 4 of the Paris Olympics 2024. Manu Bhaker has the chance to equal a 124-year-old record at the Olympics. Indian shooters are in action in both men's trap and women's trap qualification. In rowing, Balraj Panwar will be looking to reach men's singles sculls semifinals. India men's hockey team will be squaring off against Ireland after their thrilling draw against Argentina in Pool B. Three Indian boxers - Amit Panghal, Jaismine Lamboria, and Preeti Pawar - will also be in action. (India's Day 4 Schedule | Medal Tally)
As India's ace shooter Manu Bhaker basks in glory, courtesy of her bronze medal accomplishment in the Paris Olympics 10m Air Pistol final, her coach Jaspal Rana is struggling to make ends meet. Manu and Jaspal had an infamous fallout after the shooter's failure to win a medal in the Tokyo Games, due to a pistol malfunction, but the duo returned together to make amends in Paris. As Manu aims to add to India's tally, Rana is keen to find a full-time job for him that earns him a monthly salary, which hasn't been the case for the last three years.
Former pistol great Jaspal Rana's obsession and single-minded dedication to the sport has been his hallmark all along his entire journey from the time he emerged on the scene as a precocious talent, annihilating junior records and winning a bagful of international medals. But the one piece of metal that was missing from his trophy cabinet was an Olympic medal. On Sunday, the Padma Shri awardee realised that dream when Manu Bhaker stood on the podium, the bronze sitting nicely on her neck and Jaspal clapping for her in the stands.
Manu Bhaker was on course to make more Olympic history as she put herself in contention for an unprecedented second medal on a day when the men's hockey team managed an underwhelming draw, a fourth-place finish broke Indian hearts at the shooting range and the pampered archers simply capitulated. For a second day running, Bhaker was the star of the India show as she combined with Sarabjot Singh to make the bronze medal match of the 10m air pistol mixed team competition at Chateauroux's shooting range.
India At Olympics 2024: Following Manu Bhaker's historic bronze medal in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated the shooter on her win and revealed the hard work and expenditure that went behind her training. Bhaker finished third to secure a bronze medal in the final of the Women's Air Pistol event on Sunday.
