The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Thursday ordered all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to cancel an endorsement deal with a betting site or face the axe from the national team. Shakib last week announced a partnership with Betwinner news, a portal operated by the gambling firm based on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao. He wrote on his verified social media pages that it was the "one and only source of sports news!" All forms of gambling are illegal in Bangladesh -- although it is rampant during cricket matches when underground punters exploit a brief delay between live play and official broadcasts -- and cricket administrators were quick to seek an explanation from the player.
Bangladesh's biggest cricketing star Shakib Al Hasan has once again courted controversy as country's cricket board is set to investigate an alleged social media post from him endorsing a sports betting company. Back in 2019, Shakib was banned by the ICC for one year on charges of failing to report a corrupt approach from an Indian bookmaker. As per existing laws in Bangladesh, there is prohibition on facilitation and promotion of any gambling related activities.
Bangladesh appointed all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as Test captain for a third time on Thursday after Mominul Haque quit following a poor run of form. Bangladesh Cricket Board also named batsman Liton Das the new vice-captain ahead of a two-Test series in the West Indies later this month. "They will be in the positions until a further decision is made," BCB president Nazmul Hassan told a press conference. Mominul stepped down as Test captain on Tuesday. The 30-year-old left-hander has scored 162 runs in six Test matches in 2022, averaging 16.20.

Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan will be considered for this month's South Africa series after all, selectors said Saturday, days after the all-rounder claimed he was not in the right headspace for cricket. Shakib has struggled with poor performance and made just 60 runs and five wickets in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan that finished last week.
Bangladesh premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been granted a break from all forms of cricket till April 30 to deal with "mental stress" and "fatigue", ruling him out of the upcoming South Africa series that runs till April 8. The 34-year-old, who was not picked by any of the IPL franchises, was initially named in the ODI and Test squads for the South Africa tour. But following his comment that he felt like a "passenger" in the team after Bangladesh's recent series against Afghanistan, where he made 74 runs and took seven wickets in three ODIs and two T20Is, the country's cricket board (BCB) decided to give him a much-needed break.
