BEIJING : Russia's contingent at the Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing plan to leave China after being banned from participating because of the country's invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) said on Friday.
Russian athletes are continuing to be restricted from competing in sporting events around the world with the big exception being their Paralympians in the Beijing Winter Games.
With the Winter Paralympic Games opening at the end of the week, none of the 20 athletes from the Ukrainian team have arrived in Beijing.
Former high jump world champion Bohdan Bondarenko said on Wednesday (Mar 2) he was shocked that many Russian and Belarusian athletes believe that no war is taking place in his native Ukraine due to heavy state censorship of the news.
Russian athletes were barred from all competitions by World Athletics on Tuesday over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a punishment the body's president said was "against the grain" but defendable. "All athletes, support personnel and officials from Russia and Belarus will be excluded from all World Athletics Series events for the foreseeable future, with immediate effect," World Athletics said in a statement.
Britain slammed the International Paralympic Committee on Wednesday for allowing Russian athletes to compete in the Games in China.
