The Tour de France returns following a rest day and its trip to Denmark with a 171.5km ride between Dunkirk and Calais in the northern part of the country. While stage four will start and finish on the coast, the route heads inland and will feature five category four climbs to offer opportunities for those competing for the polka dot jersey.
Stage 4 at the Tour de France lands on the northern shores of France as the riders travel from Dunkirk to Calais. Dylan Groenewegen (Team BikeExchange–Jayco) is the lead rider at the top of the General Classification after the initial run abroad and his success contrasts with the Stage 2 victory of Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team).
The 2022 Tour de France begins in Copenhagen on Friday 1 July and finishes in Paris on Sunday 24 July, where Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar hopes to be wearing yellow and be crowned champion for the third year in a row.
Playing out near the coast of the Jutland peninsula, this stage might not be as windy as the previous test and so we can expect a regular bunch finish. Stage 2 victor Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) will be among the favourites as an out-and-out sprinter alongside Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck). With 182km ahead of them, the riders will set off from Vejle and travel north through the town of Jelling before moving south to the finish line in Sonderborg.
Three early Cat. 4 climbs will give a polka-dot prize as an added incentive to the breakaway but the real action will come towards the end on the 18km long Great Belt crossing of the Kattegat Sea ahead of the finish. The Tour de France resumes for Stage 2 on Saturday after Yves Lampaert claimed the first Yellow Jersey. The shock win in a soaked Copenhagen came after the Belgian beat out defending champion Tadej Pogacar by seven seconds in an impressive 15 minutes and 17 seconds, edging second-placed compatriot Wout van Aert by five seconds.
Euro 2022 kicks off on Wednesday night with hosts England facing Austria at Old Trafford.
