Max Verstappen won his first race of the season after again tussling with Lando Norris at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix Live Updates: Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen will start the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix on pole, ahead of the two McLarens, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Charles Leclerc, 4th, outqualified his Ferrari teammate and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who starts from the fourth row alongside Racing Bulls' French rookie Isack Hadjar.
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen smashed the track record to snatch pole position for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, as Yuki Tsunoda qualified a lowly 15th in his Red Bull debut. Verstappen clocked a blistering lap of 1min 26.983sec in his Red Bull, 0.012sec ahead of championship leader Norris, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri third. Verstappen set a new Suzuka track record with his final lap in Saturday's qualifying, pipping Norris right at the death.
Max Verstappen produced an incredible lap to stun McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri and claim a shock pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri went fastest Friday for a McLaren one-two in a chaotic second practice for the Japanese Grand Prix that was red-flagged four times and saw Jack Doohan crash heavily. Two of the red flags were for trackside grass fires during a badly disrupted afternoon session in which Australia's Piastri clocked a best lap of 1min 28.114sec. He pipped teammate and championship leader Lando Norris by 0.049sec in dry but blustery conditions at Suzuka, where home hero Yuki Tsunoda showed promise on his Red Bull debut.
Lando Norris overcame early struggles to set the pace in first practice for the Japanese Grand Prix.
Yuki Tsunoda vowed on Thursday to bring "something different" to Red Bull after his sudden promotion ahead of his home Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. The Japanese driver was catapulted into the Red Bull hot seat alongside four-time world champion Max Verstappen last week when he replaced the underperforming Liam Lawson two races into the season. Tsunoda will make his Red Bull debut at Suzuka, with Lawson swapping places to return to sister team Racing Bulls (RB).
Max Verstappen has hinted that he disagreed with Red Bull’s decision to axe Liam Lawson after just two races.
