Manchester City, RB Leipzig Into Champions League Last 16 As Shakhtar Donetsk Stun Barcelona

Holders Manchester City and RB Leipzig became the first teams to reach the last 16 of this season's Champions League on Tuesday while Danylo Sikan's goal allowed Shakhtar Donetsk to claim a stunning win over Barcelona. Pep Guardiola's reigning champions have eased into the knockout phase with a perfect record, a 3-0 win over Young Boys making it four wins out of four in Group G. Newcastle ends Man United’s defense of League Cup after 3-0 win

MANCHESTER, England: Manchester United’s defense of the League Cup ended with a 3-0 loss against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday that heaped more pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. An eighth defeat of the season in all competitions was the latest blow for English soccer’s most storied club, which looks in danger of suffering another season of disappointment. United lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday and Saudi-backed Newcastle repeated that scoreline to raise further questions over Ten Hag’s ability to return the club to its former glories. First-half goals from substitute Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall put the visitors in control by the break and Joe Willock completed the scoring after an hour. United had won the cup in February by beating Newcastle at Wembley Stadium as Ten Hag ended the club’s six-year wait for silverware. But that is a distant memory now as his team’s season descended deeper into crisis. The Dutch coach, who won three league titles with Ajax, was mocked by Newcastle’s fans throughout the game as they chanted that he would be fired in the morning.

Mainz ‘surprised’ after El Ghazi expresses ‘no regrets’ for Israel-Gaza post

BERLIN: German Bundesliga club Mainz on Wednesday reacted with “surprise and incomprehension” after player Anwar El Ghazi said he does “not regret” statements he made on the Israel-Hamas war. The club suspended the Dutch international for a number of social media posts related to the conflict, but said Monday the player could return “soon” after he “explicitly distanced himself” from the statements. El Ghazi, however, took to social media on Wednesday, saying “I do not regret or have any remorse for my position.” “Any other statements, comments or apologies to the contrary attributed to me are not factually correct and have not been made or authorized by me.” Mainz responded to El Ghazi’s posts on Wednesday, also on social media, saying the club would “examine the matter legally and then evaluate it.” El Ghazi was suspended on October 17 for taking a “position on the conflict in the Middle East in a manner that wasn’t tolerable for the club,” Mainz said in a previous statement. He had shared several posts on social media early in the conflict, including the phrase “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The slogan is seen by some as a call for the destruction of Israel, while others say it appeals for equality for Palestinians and Israelis. Mainz said Wednesday El Ghazi had “called in sick on Monday and was currently not in training.”
