The current European Commission has pledged to reduce the number of people living in poverty by 15 million by 2030 – but due to the global pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation and rising energy prices, the trend has actually gone the other way, with the past three years seeing the number of people in poverty rising by 3 million.
Ferreira tells Armen Georgian: "We just published a staff document which shows that when regions are kind of forgotten, when they're left behind, also politically, they tend to feel that, 'well, if the global economic system is to complex, too sophisticated, if I cannot fit in, if I cannot survive in it, then I’m against it.' So countries have to really reflect on the cost of imbalances. If we want our democracies to keep running normally, we can't leave people behind."

Asked about the COP27 climate conference that will take place in November in Egypt, Smith admitted that "there could be tension" between developing and developed countries over climate financing.
