A stage for the ages in the Southern Apennines saw Jumbo-Visma bounce back from their early disappointments with a maiden Grand Tour stage win for Koen Bouwman and a stirring performance from the Dutchman’s teammate and compatriot Tom Dumoulin. The 2017 Giro champion was part of the day’s breakaway and then battled back in numerous occasions during a thrilling finale before helping to set up Bouwman for the win. The 28-year-old Bouwman kicked from the wheel of his teammate to make light of the final double-digit ramp to the line and deny compatriot Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) and Italy’s Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates) in Potenza.

Germany’s Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) caught fellow escapee Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) inside the final three kilometres of the final 23km ascent before the duo shared out the spoils from a tough day in the saddle at the Rifugio Sapienza: for Kamna, a maiden Giro stage win and the blue king of the mountains jersey; for Lopez, the consolation of pink after his mistake on the final bend pretty much handed the win on a plate to his rival.
It looked rather ominous: just a few kilometres into the first summit finish of the Giro and Miguel Angel Lopez was already off the back of the peloton. The Colombian was in deep discussion with his Astana directeur sportif and alongside his compatriot and team-mate Harold Tejeda.
Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) emerged victorious on Mount Etna as the breakaway went the distance on Stage 4 at the Giro d’Italia, with frustrated runner-up Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek–Segafredo) surging into pink. Kamna edged a two-up sprint after Lopez slid at the final corner, but the Spaniard can take solace from seizing the maglia rosa off Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix).
