Four days before the Paris Paralympic Games begins, the Paralympic flame will on Saturday be lit next to the English hospital where the idea for the competition was born. The Paralympic movement dates back to 1948, when German neurologist Ludwig Guttmann organised sporting events for injured veterans at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, northwest of London. The Stoke Mandeville Games were held to coincide with the 1948 London Olympics on grounds next to the hospital, which were then developed into the stadium where Saturday's ceremony will take place.

The Paralympics begin in Paris on Wednesday, putting on display the talents of remarkable athletes in a city still riding the wave of the highly successful Olympics. A new generation of Paralympians will be joined by seasoned veterans competing in many of the same sensational venues in the centre of the French capital that hosted Olympic sports. A total of 18 of the 35 Olympic venues will be used for the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8, including the Grand Palais which scored rave reviews for its hosting of the fencing and taekwondo.

Eyeing an unprecedented five gold and a dozen medals in total, the first batch of the Indian contingent, including star javelin thrower Sumit Antil, left for the Paris Paralympics in advance to get acclimatized to the conditions. The 16 para athletes will stay at hotels in Paris for a few days before entering the Games Village on August 25, three days before the Opening Ceremony. The likes of Antil, who is bidding to become the first Indian to defend his Paralympics gold, will train at facilities near the French capital to acclimatize with the weather conditions there.

All eyes will be on javelin thrower Sumit Antil at the upcoming Paralympics in Paris. The Tokyo 2020 champion will be aiming to defend his title and Antil is taking a lot of inspiration from his able-bodied counterpart Neeraj Chopra, who won silver at the recently-concluded Paris Olympics. In a conversation with SAI Media, Antil, who will be one of the two flag-bearers of the 84-member Indian contingent at the opening ceremony of the Paris Paralympics from August 28 to September 8, said he is drawing inspiration from Chopra's silver-wining effort at the Stade de France in Paris on August 8.

Paralympics 2024: PCI Vice President Satya Prakash Sangwan Named Chef De Mission For India

Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) vice president Satya Prakash Sangwan was on Tuesday appointed as the chef de mission of the Indian contingent at the upcoming Paris Paralympics. Sangwan brings with him over a decade of dedicated service and experience within the Paralympic movement. As the CDM, he will lead India's largest-ever contingent of 84 para-athletes competing across 12 sports disciplines. "It is a great honour to be entrusted with this responsibility. I am committed to ensuring that our athletes have everything they need to succeed and make India proud at the Paralympics," Sangwan.
