Thomas Bach Says Controversial Beijing Olympics "Will Change Winter Sports"

The Beijing Olympics will "change the scale of winter sports forever", IOC president Thomas Bach said Thursday, on the eve of a Games beset by concerns about human rights and Covid. China's ruling Communist Party hopes the Olympics will be a soft-power success but they have been overshadowed by diplomatic boycotts, fears for tennis player Peng Shuai's safety, warnings about surveillance and the environmental impact. The Games, which launch with an opening ceremony on Friday at Beijing's "Bird's Nest" stadium and last until February 20, are taking place in one of the driest regions of China and rely almost entirely on man-made snow.

Sports Budget Increased By Rs 305.58 Crore, Emphasis On Khelo India And National Youth Schemes

The country's tremendous success at the Tokyo Olympics seems to have influenced the sports budget as the central government on Tuesday allocated Rs 3062.60 crore for financial year 2022-23 -- an increase of Rs 305.58 crore, compared to the last year's amount. In the last financial year, the government had allocated Rs 2596.14 crore for sports, which was later revised to Rs 2757.02 crore. India won seven medals, including a historic track and field gold, at the Tokyo Olympics. The sporting activities have also resumed in a phased manner in the country and 2022 is an important season because of two global events -- the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Hangzhou Asian Games -- lined up.

NFL Star Tom Brady Confirms Retirement

NFL icon Tom Brady confirmed his retirement from the sport on Tuesday, officially bringing the curtain down on a glittering 22-season career. The 44-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers superstar, widely regarded as the greatest quarterback in history, made the announcement in a post on Instagram. Brady, winner of a record seven Super Bowls, said he was quitting the sport after deciding he could no longer make the "competitive commitment" to continue. "I have always believed the sport of football is an 'all-in' proposition -- if a 100% competitive commitment isn't there, you won't succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game" Brady wrote.

Beijing 2022: Training Underway With Half Of Olympic Winter Games Athletes Already Arrived

Nearly half of all athletes for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 have now arrived in China, and over the past few days have been familiarising themselves with the 12 competition venues following their opening for training. In the mountain competition zones of Zhangjiakou and Yanqing, athletes have been testing out the cross-country skiing facilities. Nearby, lots of teams have been training in the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre. This includes Sweden, whose head coach, Johannes Lukas, told media earlier this week, as per Olympics.com: "It really is a very cool stadium and the courses are very nice. I think the whole area is very good and it was a positive first day."

Tokyo To Host Four-Nation Gymnastics Contest Ahead Of Olympics

Tokyo will host a one-off international gymnastics tournament next month, organisers said Monday, in what could serve as a practice run ahead of the postponed Olympics. Thirty-two gymnasts from China, Russia, the United States and Japan will face off at the November 8 event -- the first major multinational sporting contest Japan has held since the coronavirus pandemic hit earlier this year. The competition, which has been under discussion for months, will have strict anti-infection measures in place. It is still unclear exactly how the Tokyo Olympics, which were forced back a year by the Covid-19 crisis to July and August 2021, will go ahead.
