Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra and cricketer Dinesh Karthik are among the sportspersons celebrating the event from February 21-27, according to the UK High Commission. It said a series of on-and off-the-field interactions will highlight the shared love of sport and the opportunities it can create for people across both nations.

"Significant Development": Nita Ambani On India Winning Bid To Host 2023 IOC Session

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Nita Ambani described Saturday's decision to award India the right to host the IOC Session in Mumbai in 2023 as "a significant development for India's Olympic aspirations and a matter of great pride and joy". Mumbai received a historic 99 per cent of the votes in favour of its bid from the delegates participating in the process, with 75 members endorsing its candidature to host the IOC session in 2023. The decision confirms India will be hosting this prestigious IOC meeting for the first time since 1983, in what is set to be the start of a new era of engagement between India's youthful population and the Olympic Movement.

A Beijing Winter Olympics which saw sporting drama and milestones but was tarnished by a Russian doping scandal ended on Sunday with an uplifting closing ceremony. The Games will be remembered for new stars such as Eileen Gu but also for the doping controversy which engulfed 15-year-old figure skater Kamila Valieva and because they took place inside a vast Covid-secure "bubble". The "Bird's Nest" stadium, which also took centre stage when Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Games, was the scene for a celebratory, snowflake-themed closing ceremony attended by President Xi Jinping and a socially distanced crowd seated among red lanterns.

India on Saturday won the right to host the 2023 International Olympic Committee's (IOC) session in Mumbai in an unopposed race, during the 139th IOC Session in Beijing, China. The Indian delegation comprising the country's first individual Olympic gold medallist (Beijing 2008, shooting) Abhinav Bindra, IOC Member Nita Ambani, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra, and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur made the presentation to IOC members during the 139th IOC Session, being held alongside the ongoing Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that an open synthetic track and astro-turf football stadium will be built in Ladakh. The stadium is being built at a height of more than 10,000 feet and its construction is going to be completed soon. While addressing the nation on 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi said, "Friends, today I want to share with you one such information about Ladakh which you will definitely be proud to know about. Ladakh will soon be blessed with an impressive Open Synthetic Track and Astro-Turf Football Stadium. This stadium is being built at a height of more than 10,000 feet and its construction is going to be completed soon. This will be the largest open stadium in Ladakh where 30,000 spectators can sit together."

US Watchdog Issues Warning On Athletes' Safety At Upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics

A US rights monitor raised the alarm Monday over athletes' safety at China's upcoming Winter Olympics, after the host authorities threatened "punishment" for anti-Beijing comments. The Congressional-Executive Commission on China -- a group of Washington lawmakers and White House officials -- asked US Olympics authorities for an "urgent effort" to protect their sports stars' free speech rights at the February 4-20 tournament. The commission spoke out after Yang Shu, a senior official in the Beijing organizing committee, told an online briefing on January 18 that "any behavior or speech that is against the Olympic spirit, especially against the Chinese laws and regulations, are also subject to certain punishment."

Skier Arif Khan Eyes Top-30 Finish At Beijing Winter Olympics

Beijing Winter Olympics-bound Indian skier Arif Khan, who will participate in two events, is aiming a modest top-30 finish in the showpiece which begins on Friday. The 31-year-old Khan is the lone Indian participant in the February 4-20 quadrennial event. He secured his berth in the Winter Olympics in a qualifying event in Dubai last year. "To be honest, if you want to be a medal contender, you require at least 10 years of training and preparation, (need) to have (decent) budget and funding, only then it's possible to be in medal contention," Khan, an Alpine skier, said at a virtual interaction, organised by the Sports Authority of India, on Sunday.
