A Winter Paralympics set against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has begun with the Ukrainians’ marching party applauded at the Beijing opening ceremony, where International Paralympic Committee president Andrew Parsons called for peace.
Having braved bombs and gunfire, Ukraine’s athletes have made it safely to Beijing ahead of the Winter Paralympics, with their leader Valerii Sushkevych describing their arrival as a miracle.
The Winter Paralympics began with a 100-minute Opening Ceremony at Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium and a powerful speech lighting the way for nine days of medal competition that start Saturday.
International Paralympic Committee president Andrew Parsons gave one of the most political speeches at an Olympics and Paralympics opening ceremony for decades, as he opened the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics saying: “I want – I must – begin with a message of peace as the leader of our organisation. I am horrified at what is taking place in the world right now. The 21st century is a time for dialogue and diplomacy, not war and hate.”
The world was a different place when the 2022 Beijing Olympics came to an end on February 20.
Despite high hopes of it being a record-breaking Games and some encouraging performances, unfortunately the medals didn’t materialise in Beijing.
When Team Canada enters the National Indoor Stadium for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Paralympics, it will be led by wheelchair curler Ina Forrest and Para hockey player Greg Westlake.
