The Indian wrestler and Olympian Vinesh Phogat delivered a stunning performance in her maiden bout of the Paris Olympics 2024 campaign as she defeated the top seed and the Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the women's 50kg freestyle round of 16. Susaki was leading 2-0 before the dying seconds of the game, right before Vinesh took her by surprise. The Indian wrestler produced a dramatic turnaround, in the second period, leaving her Japanese opponent stunned. Susaki, astounded by Vinesh's move, suffered a 3-2 defeat, as the Indian made it to the quarter-finals. Susaki decided to review the final move by Vinesh but the referees ruled the decision in the Indian's favour.

Seasoned Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat entered her maiden Olympic semifinals in the 50kg category, beating Ukraine's Oksana Livach in the last-eight stage in Paris on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Vinesh defeated Livach 7-5 in a hard-fought bout to get closer to an elusive Olympic medal in her third attempt. The International Boxing Association (IBA) claimed Monday at a chaotic press conference that tests on two boxers at the centre of a gender controversy at the Paris Olympics show they "are male". The IBA said previously that it disqualified Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting from its 2023 world championships after the fighters failed gender eligibility tests, without specifying what the tests were. The boxing in the French capital is run by the International Olympic Committee because of financial, governance and ethical concerns at the IBA.
