PV Sindhu Enters Paris Olympics Women's Singles Pre-Quarterfinals

Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu stormed into the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympic Games' women's singles competition after beating Kristin Kuuba of Estonia in straight games in Paris on Wednesday. The two-time Olympic medallist won 21-5 21-10 in her second and last Group M match that lasted 33 minutes. The 29-year-old Sindhu, who had beaten Maldives' Fathimath Abdul Razzaq 21-9 21-6 in her first match, topped the group. The winner of each of the 16 groups qualifies for the round of 16.

At 22, Manu Bhaker has already become one of India's greatest athletes by winning two medals in the same Olympics and she has just one plea ahead of her third and final event at the Games -- "don't be angry if I can't add another one". Bhaker, who became the first athlete in independent India to win two medals in the same Olympics, will compete in the 25m sports pistol qualifications on August 2. She has so far won bronze medals in the women's 10m air pistol and the mixed 10m air pistol events.

India's Lakshya Sen progressed to the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympics men's singles badminton competition with a stunning straight-game win over Indonesia's world number 4 Jonatan Christie in the final group match in Paris on Wednesday. The 22-year-old from Almora, a 2021 world championships bronze medallist, displayed great maturity and tactical acumen to outwit Christie, the reigning All England and Asian champion, 21-18 21-12 in what turned out to be a lop-sided contest. Sen is likely to face compatriot HS Prannoy in the pre-quarterfinals. Prannoy will face Vietnam's Le Duc Phat later in the day.

Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale on Wednesday qualified for the finals of 50m rifle 3 positions in Chateauroux after finishing seventh in the qualification round but Aishwary Tomar ended at the 11th position to make an exit. Kusale shot 198 (99, 99) in kneeling position, 197 (98, 99) in prone and 195 (98, 97) in standing position as top eight shooters in a field of 44 made it to the final round. Kusale finished with an overall score of 590 (38x), while Tomar accumulated 589 (33x) with shots of 197 (98, 99) in kneeling position, 199 (100, 990) in prone and 193 (95, 98) in standing position.

India's miserable run on the shotgun ranges continued as trap shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman, despite shooting two perfect scores of 25 in the last two qualification rounds on Tuesday, finished 21st among 30 marksmen at the Olympic Games. The top-six shooters make it to the final round and, with an aggregate score of 118/125 after five rounds of qualification over two days, Tondaiman was five points adrift of the top-four shooters who shot 123 each in a high-quality field. The 37-year-old Tondaiman, who had shot 22, 25, 21, on Day 1 of the qualification round on Monday and was placed last among 30 competitors, fared much better with two perfect-25s on Tuesday but it came too late in the day at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre.
