Paris Olympics 2024: Avinash Sable Qualifies For 3000m Steeplechase Final

Avinash Sable became the first Indian man to qualify for the 3000m steeplechase final after finishing fifth in his heat but quartermiler Kiran Pahal failed to book an automatic semi-final berth in women's 400m following a seventh place finish in her heat at the Paris Olympics on Monday. Sable, easily the most decorated track and field athlete after Neeraj Chopra in the current contingent, timed 8:15.43 minutes to finish fifth in the second heat to make it to the final round. As per rule, the top five athletes in each of the three heats qualify for the final. However, Sable's heat timing was well below his best effort of 8:09.91 minutes, which he had clocked at the Paris Diamond League last month.

US sprint king Noah Lyles powered to gold by just five thousands of a second Sunday in the closest 100m in modern Olympic history, as Novak Djokovic added a tennis gold medal to his glittering CV. A thrilling ninth day of Olympic action also saw two world records tumble in the Paris pool, the first-ever gymnastics gold for an African nation and the Refugee Team's first medal in history. But as darkness fell, all eyes were trained on the lilac track of the Stade de France, where Lyles, 27, was bidding to end two decades of Olympic sprinting hurt for the US.

International Boxing Association Calls Imane Khelif, Lin Yu-Ting "Male" Amid Paris Olympics 2024 Gender Row

The International Boxing Association (IBA) claimed Monday at a chaotic press conference that tests on two boxers at the centre of a gender controversy at the Paris Olympics show they "are male". The IBA said previously that it disqualified Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting from its 2023 world championships after the fighters failed gender eligibility tests, without specifying what the tests were. The boxing in the French capital is run by the International Olympic Committee because of financial, governance and ethical concerns at the IBA.

Injured Nisha Dahiya's Valiant Effort Wins Internet Despite Paris Olympics 2024 Wrestling Loss

Leading 8-1 at one point in time with just over 90 seconds left, Nisha sustained a serious injury on her right hand, which left her in agonising pain as she wept inconsolably. Following a medical break, Nisha didn't have any strength left in her right hand and it became a cakewalk for the North Korean, who showed her ruthless streak to get a leg-hold and nine straight points.

India's Red Card Appeal Rejected, Amit Rohidas To Miss Olympics Hockey Semi-Final vs Germany

India's key defender and first rusher Amit Rohidas will miss Tuesday's Olympic men's hockey semifinal against Germany after the country's appeal against his one-match suspension, for being red-carded in the quarterfinal, was rejected by the international body FIH. This means India will have only 15 players available for the key clash, which is a big setback for the eight-time Olympic champions. "Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4," a FIH statement read.
