Long jumpers Murali Sreeshankar and Muhammad Anees Yahiya qualified for the final of the men's long jump event after going past their respective qualifying rounds at the Commonwealth Games. Sreeshankar stormed into the final with his very first jump of 8.05m. The 23-year-old from Kerala, one of the top Indian medal contenders, was the only athlete in his group to go past the qualifying mark of 8m.
Having become the first Indian male athlete to qualify for the long jump finals in the World Championships, Sreeshankar had raised hopes of a historic medal in the showpiece. But his performance in the final was way below his season's and personal best of 8.36m. He had three legal jumps -- the opening jump of 7.96m, fourth round effort of 7.89m and last attempt of 7.83m.

Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou won the silver medal with an effort of 8.32m while Switzerland's Simon Ehammer (8.16m) won the bronze medal.

Indian long-jumper Murali Sreeshankar qualified for the final of the men's long jump at the World Athletics Championships with a best attempt of 8m in the heats. He finished seventh in the heats and was the only Indian to progress. Jeswin Aldrin (best attempt - 7.79m) and Muhammed Anees Yahiya (best attempt 7.73m) were the other Indians in the fray but they could not finish among the top-12 in the heats and hence failed to progress to the final.
The World Athletics Championship 2022 will kick start on July 16 in the United States of America. The 18th edition of the event will be held across the states of Eugene and Oregon. The Athletics Federation of India had announced a 22-member contingent to compete at the 10-day-long tournament. Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra will be India's flagbearer. India have won just one medal at the finals, that too a bronze in 2003 when Anju Bobby George finished third in the women's long jump event. Murali Shreeshankar will be in action on the opening day in the men's long jump event.
