Geraint Thomas will not line up in the leader’s pink jersey on Sunday’s Stage 15 after the Welshman and his Ineos Grenadiers team decided to surrender the overall lead. The Welshman has been in the leader's pink jersey since Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) pulled out of the race with Covid ahead of the first rest day. When Ineos team-mate Tao Geoghegan Hart also departed the Giro after fracturing his hip in a freak crash, the race looked set for a straight showdown between Thomas and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).
Nico Denz (Bora-hansgrohe) doubled up at the Giro d’Italia after pulling off an incredible win on Stage 14, while Bruno Armirail (Groupama–FDJ) sailed into the maglia rosa as Ineos Grenadiers chose to give it away. The German, who also won Stage 12, hauled a five-strong chase group into contention in the finale, joining the leading trio of Stefano Oldani (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Davide Ballerini (Soudal Quick-Step) and Tom Skujins (Trek–Segafredo) inside the last kilometre.
The stunning backdrop to the town of Hallstatt in the Austrian mountains is thought to have inspired Disney’s Frozen.
Rugby World Cup holders South Africa will hold a training camp in Corsica before beginning their title defence against Scotland in Marseille on 10 September.
Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia will see the riders begin in Sierre and cross the border into Switzerland, before making their way back towards Italy in a thrilling downhill finish. In contrast to the sharp climbs in Stage 13, there will only be one climb on Saturday in the ascent of Passo del Sempione.
On the eve of qualifying for the 107th Indianapolis 500, British professional race car driver Katherine Legge has her sights set on making her third start in the iconic American race. If she does qualify for one of the coveted 33 spots in the grid (34 teams are attempting to qualify), Legge also will become the first woman to do so since Simona De Silvestro made her sixth start at Indy in 2021.
Emotions ran high in the Swiss ski resort of Crans Montana as Colombia’s Einer Rubio (Movistar) dug deep and kept a low profile on the final climb of a shortened Stage 13 of the Giro before catching out his fellow escapees Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Jefferson Cepeda (EF Education-EasyPost) with a magical turn of pace at the finish. French veteran Pinot and Ecuador’s Cepeda tore strips off each other and bickered incessantly during a thrilling final ascent, trading more blows than 10 rounds between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed.
