Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) hit out at his own team in an extraordinary interview at the Giro d’Italia, suggesting he does not care about team-mate’s Joao Almeida’s hunt for the overall victory. The Australian complained that he was being forced to help Almeida and target a top 10 finish in the general classification rather than chase stage victories, which he said goes against an agreement he made when he penned a contract extension with the team only last week. Ad Vine began Stage 12 in 18th place in the general classification, 12’52” back on leader Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), with Almeida in third at 22”.
Sean Kelly admits he would be “really peed off” if he was in GC hopeful Joao Almeida’s shoes at the Giro d’Italia after seeing his team-mate Davide Formolo lead a futile uphill chase on Stage 12 – less than 24 hours before the peloton roll out for the biggest mountain test yet. Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) started the day third in the general classification, just 22 seconds down on Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) in the overall competition. A huge 30-man breakaway animated an intriguing Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia before four riders extricated themselves with 90km to go ahead of a well-deserved win for the German journeyman Nico Denz (Bora-Hansgrohe). Denz went clear of a leading quartet on the final climb of the day alongside Latvia’s Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo) and Australian debutant Sebastian Berwick (Israel-PremierTech) before getting the better of his two rivals in an exciting finish in Rivoli.
Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) was left ruing a “big loss” at the Giro d’Italia after team-mate Tao Geoghegan Hart left the race in an ambulance, while regular Ineos road captain Luke Rowe called it “gut-wrenching” on The Breakaway. Thomas and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) also went down in the crash with 68km remaining on Stage 11 when Alessandro Covi (UAE Team Emirates) slid out on a wet turn and took a number of riders with him. Although Thomas and Roglic resumed, Geoghegan Hart was not so fortunate and was placed on a stretcher.
After two relatively simple stages – albeit the first in freezing rain – things step up a little on Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia as we flirt with the mountains again. The profile is not particularly challenging, however, so we can expect plenty of early action as our non-GC stars attempt to get in the day’s breakaway in the knowledge they may not be caught.
