Geraint Thomas was delighted with how he weathered an attack from Primoz Roglic on Stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia, as he protected his race lead. Roglic shipped time on Tuesday to suggest he was not at his best, but two days on, the Slovenian put his Jumbo-Visma team to work before launching an attack on the penultimate climb of the day. Ad Joao Almeida started the day in second place, but the UAE Team Emirates leader could not hold the wheel and lost time on the day.

Update: No. 3 Wake Forest captured its first-ever NCAA DI women’s golf national title on Wednesday, defeating No. 5 Southern California 3-1-0. Demon Deacons players Emilia Migliaccio, Rachel Kuehn and Lauren Walsh won their respective matches to clinch the 2023 title. Of note, Walsh took down USC’s Brianna Navarossa in the day’s anchor match — a day after Navarrossa beat Stanford’s Rose Zhang, who won the individual title on Monday. The Demon Deacons beat No. 6 Florida State in the quarterfinals before downing No. 7 Texas A&M to reach the national championship match, where they beat USC.
Thibaut Pinot’s pursuit of a fairy tale ending to his final Giro d’Italia was derailed by the Italian champion Filippo Zana (Team Jayco-AlUla) in a thrilling two-way sprint at the end of the first of two massive days in the Dolomites. There may be four stages remaining at the Giro d’Italia, including three big opportunities to gain time, but Jens Voigt has already written off Primoz Roglic’s hopes of winning the race. The Jumbo-Visma star started Thursday’s Stage 18 third in the general classification, 29 seconds behind leader Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). Ad Roglic was briefly favourite to win a maiden Giro after Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) withdrew due to Covid before Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) crashed out, but he wobbled in the mountains on Stage 16 as Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) and Thomas put time into him.
