Club World Cup helped new Bayern players integrate quickly, says Kompany

MUNICH: The Club World Cup may have hampered some clubs’ pre-season preparations but for Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany the month-long tournament helped with a quick and seamless integration of new signings. The Bavarians had new arrivals Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof in the squad for the June 14 to July 13 tournament in the United States, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Paris St. Germain. Several teams, including Borussia Dortmund, have said they felt the impact of a shorter-than-usual pre-season training period because of their participation in the Club World Cup. The tournament left several top European teams with only four weeks to rest and prepare for the new season.

Rodri a question mark for City’s Premier League clash with Arsenal

MANCHESTER: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said his Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Arsenal due to fitness concerns in what is sure to be a blockbuster clash. City will arrive in North London on a wave of momentum after back-to-back wins over Manchester United and Napoli, but Rodri came off after an hour against the Serie A leaders in Thursday’s Champions League match, raising concerns about his fitness. Guardiola said the Spain midfielder will be assessed ahead of Sunday’s game when asked if he would play. “I don’t know yet, but he was so smart (to request a substitution against Napoli on Thursday). We’ll see, day-by-day,” Guardiola added. “The training (on Wednesday), he didn’t feel comfortable, but said, ‘No, no, I will be fine, and he played extraordinarily.

McLaren heads into Azerbaijan Grand Prix on verge of F1 constructors’ title

The Formula 1 title race is heating up, and McLaren’s golden rule — “Let ‘em race” — risks expanding into a whole rule book.Asking Oscar Piastri to give up second place to Lando Norris at the Italian Grand Prix because of a slow pit stop showed how McLaren’s seemingly simple approach risks being bogged down in debates about what’s fair on track. The battle between Norris and Piastri will become McLaren’s sole focus if the team can wrap up the constructors’ title Sunday at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku with a record seven races remaining.McLaren leads by 337 points and takes the title if one driver wins and the other is second or third, which would end the faint mathematical chances of Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull. It’s a big contrast to last year, when McLaren held off Ferrari in the final race of the season to win the constructors’ title for the first time in 26 years. “It’s a pretty remarkable position that we’re in,” Piastri said.

Man United post record revenues but are still making losses

MANCHESTER: Manchester United posted record revenues in their latest annual accounts despite missing out on Champions League soccer and enduring their its worst-ever Premier League campaign. But despite revenues of 666.5 million pounds ($910 million) the 20-time English champion still reported losses of 33 million pounds ($45 million). “To have generated record revenues during such a challenging year for the club demonstrate the resilience which is a hallmark of Manchester United,” chief executive Omar Berrada said. The accounts for the year ending June 30, 2025, came after minority owner Jim Ratcliffe embarked on cost-cutting measures, which have seen two rounds of job cuts with an estimated reduction of more than 400 members of staff, as well as ticket price hikes. United told fans in January they could not sustain their losses and Ratcliffe later said the club were in danger of running out of money by the end of the year. Losses fell from 113.2 million pounds to 33 million. United’s commercial strength comes despite their ongoing troubles on the field, which have seen them struggle to keep pace with Premier League rivals like Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. They did not play in the lucrative Champions League last season and finished 15th in England’s 20-team top division — their lowest since the inception of the Premier League in 1992. They also recorded their lowest points total and highest number of losses, which led to them failing to qualify for any European soccer competition this season. United have not won the league title since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. This season has not started well either, with Ruben Amorim’s team only winning one of four games and having been eliminated from the English
