When every Winter Olympics passes, the conversation quickly turns to how dangerous everything seems to be. Well, almost everything.
If you're the superstitious type, you've likely taken notice of Curve 13 of the Flying Dragon Course in Beijing. It's the one that caused all sorts of difficulty for the luge events and today it ended the Olympic medal hopes of Great Britain's two-man bobsled.
Great Britain's chances of winning a Winter Olympic medal in the two-man bobsleigh faded quickly after mistakes from pilot Brad Hall left them outside the top 10 at the halfway point of the competition. Germany were back on top in the sliding competitions, having won all but one event at the sliding centre across bobsleigh, skeleton and luge in Beijing.
The German bobsleigh team are hoping to have a big advantage at the Winter Olympics after a former luger and Eurosport Germany pundit linked up with BMW to develop a simulator of the track at Beijing 2022. Julian von Schleinitz is a former junior world champion in luge and has been working with Eurosport as an expert commentator following his retirement in 2018.
Kaillie Humphries says her monobob victory feels “more emotional” than her other successes, after she became the first woman to win Olympic gold for two different countries. The bobsleigh great is competing for the US at the Winter Olympics in Beijing, after previously winning two golds and a bronze for Canada across three Games. But Humphries left her previous set-up after making harassment claims against Bobsleigh Canada and she only received clearance to go to China as an American two months ago.
