El 15 de noviembre de 1961 el Atlético recibió en el Metropolitano al Leicester en partido de los octavos de final vuelta de la Recopa. En la ida el Atlético había registrado un buen resultado: 1-1, con tanto de Mendonça. En la vuelta, el Atlético ganó por 2-0, con tantos de Collar y Jones. El Atlético tuvo muchos problemas para resolver la eliminatoria, ya que Griffa se lesionó al poco del incio del partido y tuvo que jugar en inferioridad numérica. Collar, de penalti, pudo batir a Banks, cancerbero del Leicester. Y en la recta final marcó Jones el 2-0 definitivo. El conjunto madrileño eliminó posteriormente a Werder Bremen, Jena y ganó la final ante la Fiorentina. Se necesitaron dos partidos para decidir el campeón. El Atlético ganó en esa campaña 61-62 el primer título europeo de su historia. Pero antes dejó fuera al Leicester. En el Metropolitano, formó con Madinabeytia; Rivilla, Griffa, Calleja; Callejo, Rodríguez; Medina, Adelardo, Jones, Mendonça y Collar.
