With Israel signalling that the most intensive phase of its war on Hamas could now be over, Fayyad explained why he thinks "there is not really much to go on by way of optimism that this war is coming to an end soon enough".
Meanwhile, the Israeli government says it will soon start winding down the intensive ground war in Gaza. Some Israeli troops have already pulled out of the north of the enclave and more are expected to withdraw from the south in the weeks ahead. But there has been little let-up in the bombardment of Gaza, with Palestinian civilians continuing to bear the brunt of the conflict. We take a closer look.

Meanwhile, the UN has voiced alarm at the high number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war. On Sunday, two more reporters lost their lives after their car was hit in an Israeli strike near Rafah. One of them was the son of Al Jazeera's Gaza bureau chief. The Doha-based channel is accusing Israel of carrying out a "targeted killing".

Nasser al Qudwa, a former foreign minister and a nephew of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, said in an interview with FRANCE 24 that it “definitely doesn’t look as if Israel is aiming at Hamas” but is actually waging a “real war of savagery” on Palestinians civilians.
