India vs Sri Lanka: Shubman Gill readies for first Test on home ground

Sri Lanka at Mohali, there's another cricketer who will be hungry to take the ground on Friday. Local boy Shubman Gill, one of the architects of the historic win against Australia at the Gabba, is most likely to play his first Test in front of his home crowd. Gill's memorable 91 runs in the chase of the famous Brisbane Test, helped India breach the 'Gabba' fortress and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2021. That innings was like a trailer of a blockbuster career in the making. A product of India's robust domestic set-up, Shubman gave glimpses of his batting prowess by tackling the fiery trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc with ease. The Punjab youngster's knock also sent out a message that the next generation of Indian cricket is ready to take forward the legacy of the stalwarts of the past decades.

Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in Test cricket for the first time when the teams walks out at the PCA Stadium in Mohali to take on Sri Lanka in the first Test match from Friday. Rohit will have big boots to fill as he takes over from Virat Kohli, who stepped down from captaincy in cricket's longest format after India's 1-2 loss to South Africa, away from home, earlier this year. Kohli is India's most successful Test captains in terms of victories and win percentage and has left behind a strong legacy.

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test: Can Team India Maintain Outstanding Record At Fortress Mohali?

The Indian men's cricket team played a Test match at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali for the first time in December 1994. The team went on to lose the match by a huge margin of 243 runs to West Indies. Since then, Mohali has hosted a total of 12 Tests and India have never lost a match there. What is even more impressive is that since 2000, the hosts have won 7 of the 10 Tests played at this venue, while the three other matches have been drawn.

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test: Rohit Sharma takes reins as India set for new era in Virat Kohli's 100th Test

Rohit Sharma begins a new era as India's Test captain on Friday when the two-match series against Sri Lanka begins, as predecessor Virat Kohli makes a landmark 100th appearance. Rohit is now in charge across all formats, succeeding Kohli who drove India up the world rankings but failed to lift any international silverware. Rohit, 34, reasserted his white-ball leadership credentials with a 3-0 Twenty20 sweep of Sri Lanka on Sunday that gave India a record-equalling 12th straight win.

India vs Sri Lanka: Mohali to allow 50 percent crowd for Virat Kohli's 100th Test

Cricket Association (PCA) has decided to open the gates for spectators at 50% capacity for the upcoming first Test between India and Sri Lanka, which will be Virat Kohli’s 100th for India. The state association had earlier announced a complete ban on spectators despite cases of Covid-19 being on the decline in these parts. However, on Tuesday, the PCA took the call after fans continued to throng the stadium for a glimpse of their favourite cricketers during the nets session. “Keeping in mind all Covid-19 protocols, the PCA has got the Indian cricket board’s (BCCI) nod to allow spectators at 50% capacity for the first Test. With the decreasing number of Covid-19 cases in the city, the PCA has decided to also open online sale of tickets for the game,” PCA treasurer RP Singla told TOI on Tuesday.

Jasprit Bumrah said on Tuesday his role as a senior member of the side was well-defined irrespective of the vice-captaincy. “I don’t look at it as a particular position, (or) that a bowler or a batter is a leader. As a senior member of the team, you have to help the side in whatever capacity you can. For me it is just a post.
