Yashasvi Jaiswal Earns Maiden Call Up For West Indies Tests, Cheteshwar Pujara Dropped

The BCCI on Friday announced Team India's squad for two Tests and three ODIs against West Indies. Yashasvi Jaiswal, on the back of his breakthrough season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), earned his maiden India call-up, while pacer Mukesh Kumar also earned his first Test call-up. In another huge development, veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped from the side for the two match Test series. Rohit Sharma will lead the side in both Test and ODIs, while Ajinkya Rahane and Hardik Pandya will deputise him in Tests and ODIs, respectively.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav were the big names missing from the Indian cricket team Test squad which will be travelling to West Indies in July. Pujara had a disappointing outing at the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia while the decision to pick Umesh over veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was met with a lot of criticism. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami was also rested for the series with Navdeep Saini getting a call-up. In the pace department, Jaydev Unadkat kept his spot while Delhi Capitals pacer Mukesh Kumar received his maiden India call-up.

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), with an aim to create 'pace bowling bank', tried out more than 1000 bowlers in open trials between June 10-21 to tap into village talent. India batter KL Rahul had picked up an injury in his right leg during IPL 2023 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament and then also could not be a part of the Indian squad which squared off against Australia in the World Test Championship final at The Oval. The 31-year-old batter had to go undergo a surgery and is currently working in his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Pakistan Board's Incoming Chairman Rejects Asia Cup 'Hybrid Model'

The likely new chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Zaka Ashraf has rejected his predecessor Najam Sethi's much-publicised "hybrid model" for the upcoming Asia Cup, which is slated to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in September. "The first point is that I had rejected the hybrid model (for Asia Cup) in the past itself - because I do not agree with it. The board of the Asian Cricket Council had decided that it should be held in Pakistan, then we should host it," Ashraf said during a press conference in the Pakistan capital on Wednesday.
