It's been one hell of a year.
Indian men's hockey team vice-captain Hardik Singh on Wednesday said the FIH Player of the Year award is a recognition of his "hard work and perseverance" that he has put in over the years to excel in the sport he loves. Hardik on Tuesday became the third male player from India to win the coveted award, joining Manpreet Singh (2019) and Harmanpreet Singh (2020-21 and 2021-22). Besides Hardik, India women's team skipper Savita Punia won the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award for the third consecutive time.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Jugraj Singh struck a brace each as the Indian men's hockey team beat France 5-4 in its fourth and final match to notch up its lone win in the five-nation tournament here on Wednesday. Jugraj scored in the 20th and 60th minutes while Harmanpreet found the target in the 25th and 56th minutes. Vivek Sagar Prasad (16th) struck once in the match that went back and forth throughout its duration. India thus ended their largely disappointing campaign with a win. They had lost all their earlier three matches in the tournament -- 0-1 to Spain, 2-7 to Belgium and 2-3 to Germany. France are the lowest-ranked side at ninth while India are at third. The first quarter saw France take the lead through a penalty-corner conversion from Lucas Montecot in the 11th minute. India equalised early in the second quarter through a field goal from Vivek.
The Indian men's hockey team's woeful run in the five-nation tournament continued as it lost 2-3 against Germany to slump to its third consecutive defeat on Saturday. Abhishek (9th minute) and Shamsher Singh (14th) found the back of the net for India in the first quarter before the Germans fought back with strikes from Malte Hellwig (28th), Christopher Ruhr (50th) and Gonzalo Peillat (51st). India had earlier lost to Spain (0-1) and Belgium (2-7) respectively. The Indians, though, started on a bright note and raced to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter through goals from Abhishek and Shamsher.
It took about 14 minutes for Blayre Turnbull to make Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) history.
The Indian women's hockey team suffered a 1-3 defeat to Germany in the five-nation tournament on Tuesday. Captain Nike Lorez (11th minute), Hanna Carina Granitzki (23rd) and Charlotte Stapenhorst (52nd) scored for Germany, while Nikki Pradhan (34th) pulled one back for India. Germany took the game by the scruff of the neck in the first quarter. Captain Lorez slotted the ball past Bichu Devi Kharibam to put Germany in the lead early on. Granitzki doubled the lead for Germany in the second quarter through a penalty corner goal and presented India with a mountain to climb.
