R Praggnanandhaa Draws With D Gukesh In Tata Steel Chess Tournament

Grandmaster R Praggnanadhaa played out a solid draw with World champion D Gukesh in the eighth round of the Tata Steel Masters at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. Playing the white side of a Berlin defense, Praggnanadhaa had slightly favourable position optically but Gukesh was always on guard to defend. It was in the early middle game that Gukesh sacrificed a pawn to get his counterplay rolling and even though Praggnanadhaa tried to make use of it, the game was always closer to a draw.

"New Policy To Be Formulated For National Level Sports Players": Himachal Chief Minister

Himachal Pradesh government would introduce a new policy for national level players soon, said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday while addressing the state contingent heading to the 38th National Games to be held in Uttarakhand. The 200-member contingent of the state will participate in the Games scheduled from January 28 to February 14, a statement issued here said. He said basic sports infrastructure was being developed at the district level. Additionally, the prize money for a podium finish in international sports events has been significantly increased.

Reigning Asian champion Jyothi Yarraji clinched gold in her first race of the season, that too with a national record, winning the 60m hurdles event by clocking 8.04 seconds at the Elite Indoor Meeting in Nantes, France. The 25-year-old Yarraji, in fact, broke her own earlier national record of 8.12 seconds twice in a matter of few hours on Sunday. She first clocked 8.07 seconds in the heats and then bettered her time in the final at the Stadium Pierre-Quinon in the World Athletics Indoor Tour bronze level meet.
